By far, the best thing I ever did for my business was fire my largest client.
I had worked with them for over a decade. It was a decision I wrestled with at the time, but if I had it to do over again I would not wait so long. It took me over a year to finally replace that lost income which accounted for about half of my yearly revenue.
I have since been able to free up time up to work with clients who value my responsiveness, my experience, my integrity, and my creativity. I love what I do, and I love who I do it for.
When you stand up for yourself the person who most needs to hear it is you. As women we are often encouraged to feel lucky we are invited to the table at all. This culture permeates everywhere, and it happens in both academia and in business. I don't know many people (or anyone one else really) who marched for their PhD and JD within a month of each other like I did. I know how to work hard. That was never the issue. I live by the Golden Rule and I expect others to do the same.
If you find yourself struggling in business. First, keep going! You are likely doing great, and may simply need a few tweaks. Second, at least consider that you might benefit from taking a hard look at yourself and spending as much time and energy on recognizing your strengths as you do on tearing yourself down. Balance is key after all.

This picture is of me and my malamute. He is amazing. He is strong and kind (like me!). This picture still makes me smile though I have since lost 50 pounds. It is amazing what a perspective shift can do for you both inside and out.
